“Reinventar Móstoles Centro” was a urban planning competition organized as a collaboration between Móstoles town council. Madrid Think Tank and the COAM.
Location The historical centre of Móstoles, Madrid.
Brief To improve the conditions of the historical centre of Móstoles. The project was to be based on budget-conscious, cost-effective town planning solutions that achieved maximum impact with minimum intervention and disruption to the population.
Background Móstoles is the second- largest city in population in the Autonomous Community of Madrid. Until the mid 20th century, Móstoles was a small village but with mass immigration from the rural countryside to the capital, it grew exponentially. Nowadays it is considered to be a suburb of the capital, but it still maitains some of its traditional local character.
Personal Intention The intention was to create a realistic urban planning proposal that fulfilled the needs of the town council and population, based on the environmental principle of the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. This strategy produced a programme that combined low-budget invervention, improved accesibility with a refurbishment and modernisation of the existing urban centre, without losing sight of the history and the origins of Móstoles.
